Arsenal earned a
hard-fought victory against arch rivals Tottenham Hotspur on
Wednesday evening to progress to the fourth round of the Capital One
Cup.
Mathieu
Flamini scored both of Arsenal's goals as they held on for a
2-1 success, a result that guaranteed them a spot in the draw for the
next stage of the competition.
The Gunners were
solid throughout the clash despite Arsene Wenger opting to select a
weakened side for the most recent edition of the north London derby.
While the Capital One Cup may not be at the top of Arsenal's
priorities this season, they will be keen to perform well in both of
the domestic cup competitions this season.
In the fourth
round of the tournament, Arsenal will face a potentially difficult
trip to Sheffield Wednesday after the Owls earned a 1-0 victory away
at Newcastle United. Lewis McGugan was the hero as the Championship
side secured a Premier League scalp, although the Magpies have been
struggling to adapt under new manager Steve McClaren.
Hillsborough is
always a difficult place to go and the Gunners will need to be at
their very best if they are to guarantee progression past Wednesday
in the next round. Arsenal, who have won the FA Cup in each of the
past two seasons, are
at the time this article was produced 11/2 to win the 2015/16 Capital
One Cup - something that they have not managed to do since
1993.
The Gunners will
be looking forward to their upcoming fixture, which will take place
during the week commencing October 26th, and will believe that they
can go on to progress throughout the competition. Wenger's era is
slowly coming to an end and the Frenchman will be looking to sign off
with a trophy. While this may not be the number one priority, Arsenal
fans certainly wouldn't say no to a good cup run.
